They say time flies when you’re having fun— which is the only way I can explain being in television news for more than 25 years.

I actually got my start in the studios of my Chicagoland high school getting involved with our half hour weekly live cable access news program called NewsScene.

It was about that time those career surveys we all took at that young age said I should consider being an elementary school teacher. It definitely explains my penchant for always trying to include a little bit of the science behind why the atmosphere is doing what it’s doing in my weathercasts. And why I enjoy school classroom visits seeing those little minds brimming with curiosity.

I’ve been fascinated by the weather everywhere I’ve lived and visited around the world. While most think of the Pacific Northwest as just soggy, the weather patterns and microclimates make accurate forecasting incredibly challenging.

My love of the outdoors, science, and how humans can affect the environment are what fuel my curiosity and passion when it comes to my reporting. It’s also what drove me to take and complete the coursework and volunteer practicum to become a Master Gardener. While the struggle to get decent tomatoes in the NW continues to elude me, I’ve definitely learned more about horticulture from my mistakes than my successes.

I’m known around the newsroom for being a full Swiss Army knife of a team player-- whether filling in doing traffic, in the anchor seat, or in the field reporting. Being trusted to handle huge breaking news is a huge badge by my colleagues and managers has always been a huge badge of honor I wear proudly.

Behind the scenes my sense of humor and sarcasm seem to take more center stage— but people have discovered how handy the random fact database in my head can be.

I always try to be an active part of the communities where I live and work. From helping teach low-income families how to grow a portion of their own food, to being on the board of directors for several charities that help farmers, families, and animals. Most recently, I was on the Board of Directors for Seattle Tilth, helping steer the regional non-profit with a more than million dollar budget through several mergers that made them a statewide organization that inspires and educates about our local food system.

If I had free time I would travel more. I love meeting people and trying new things. Every year I try to visit one place on the planet I’ve never been to, and one place in the Northwest I have not visited. Last year included: Australia and New Zealand; locally explored more of the San Juan Islands. Out of 50 states, I’ve visited 40. I’ve been as far east as Berlin, as far south as Auckland, as far north as Reykjavik and as far west as Nagasaki.
